The Man of the Crowd represents Brazilian cinematography as fierce, uncompromising and internationally confident artistic movement whose ambition goes beyond Brazilian shores, and that speaks globally comprehensible language without relying on common film forms. Award-winning director Marcelo Gomes, together with Cao Guimarães tell a simple story of a lonely subway driver who defies the invisible troubles of city life while trying to cope with his existential distress. Film protagonist Juvenal embodies the empty life in modern society, which replaces the basic values of human relations with modernist progress. The directors create their story in a rectangular vertically oriented format, which emphasizes the claustrophobic feelings of loneliness that we experience along with the protagonist. The hypnotic images of life in a big city dig their way into our subconsciousness and underline the remarkable cinematic experience that stands outside of our everyday film perception. The film is based on a short story of the same name by Edgar Allan Poe. (Kino Brasil)
