Shakespeares unsterbliches Liebesdrama in meisterhafter Verfilmung Regisseur Zeffirelli ging 1968 das einzigartige Wagnis ein, die Rollen von Romeo und Julia mit zwei unbekannten Teenagern zu besetzen, die genauso jung waren wie die Titelhelden des Stücks. Das Ergebnis verblüffte damals die Welt, und es begeistert bis heute Der gerade erst 17-jährige Leonard Whiting und die nur 15 Jahre alte Olivia Hussey hauchen den klassischen Versen mit ihrem Spiel so viel frisches Leben ein, dass geradezu die Funken fliegen. Wenn man Shakespeare sagt, denken viele Leute zuerst an "Romeo und Julia", was sehr schade ist, da er auch andere, noch gewaltigere Tragödien geschrieben hat (siehe "Hamlet" oder "Macbeth"). Zeffirellis Verfilmung ist dem Thema sehr treu, sowohl im positiven als auch im negativen Sinne. Die beiden Hauptdarsteller sind hervorragend in ihren Rollen, keine Frage, aber durch die enge Bindung an das Thema wirkt das Ganze zu theatralisch und künstlich, und natürlich verstehe ich diese Art der Darstellung, aber ich denke trotzdem, dass sie realistischer hätte gemacht werden können. Ich muss jedoch das eindringliche musikalische Motiv von Rota loben, das sich in verschiedenen Variationen durch den gesamten Film zieht. Wäre der Film eine halbe Stunde kürzer und würde er sich authentischer anfühlen, hätte er mir sicher besser gefallen - so aber ist er ein kunstvoll gemachtes, aber für meinen Geschmack zu fernes Spektakel.

I certainly don't blame Master Zeffirelli for having me thinking for a long time only about only three stars. I see the problem in the story itself, which may be an immortal classic, the prototype of a massively accepted and thought-provoking romance, etc., but for me, as a viewer and as a person who has become jaded by the modern age, where the pinnacle of romantic cinema is the leaky Titanic and the sinking teenage icon (nothing against Leo – he's a great actor), this tale is so unbearably cheesy and unrealistic that I have no need to see it or, heaven forbid, read it ever again. In spite of all this, however, I still have to appreciate the beautiful form, the dramatic presentation of some scenes (the first kiss of Romeo and Juliet, the duel between Tybalt and Mercurio) and the likeable performances, which would surely have been an ornament even to the glorious English theatre. Unfortunately, in the second half I started to fall asleep suspiciously often, so the 4* is paradoxically saved only by the very lilting voices of the top Czech dubbing team, who created (with a few exceptions) a very pleasant theatrical backdrop. And it is in the theatre that this story primarily belongs. 70%
