Alex (Kris Holden-Ried, THE TUDORS, UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING) ist ein „Returned", jemand der mit einem Zombievirus infiziert wurde, jedoch durch Medikamente vor der Verwandlung bewahrt wird. Seine Frau Kate (Emily Hampshire, COSMOPOLIS), eine Ärztin, kämpft für die Entwicklung neuer Wirkstoffe gegen das Virus. Die Vorräte für das bisherige Mittel werden langsam knapp, und die Feindseligkeit und Gewaltbereitschaft gegenüber den „Returned" nimmt immer mehr zu. Radikale Gruppierungen kämpfen um die Oberhand über die Restbestände. Die Situation droht zu eskalieren, und Alex' Zeit läuft langsam ab ... (MFA/MFA+)

An excellent idea about how to have an original take on the zombie apocalypse. The creators don’t get all the juice out of it,though, which is a pity, but The Returned has its strong moments. It’s very well made and the climax even managed to arouse some emotions (though the ending maybe is trying a bit too much). A pleasant surprise from the director of the below-par The Possession of Emma Evans. 7/10

In this case, the Spanish-Canadian collaboration, in my opinion, paid off. The only issue I see is that the film is marketed as a horror, which might not be entirely accurate. It is not a horror film, as there are no horror moments or the necessary atmosphere. It's partly a science fiction film, a film about people who have different views of the world. It's not revelatory in that sense, but it's certainly interesting.
