A Long Way Down - Zurück ins Leben

How should I express the feelings I have to another person? That’s what the creator of this movie should ask himself. He is actually behind a movie that, in its essence, really isn’t bad. Aaron Paul, Imogen Poots, Pierce Brosnan, Rosamunde Pike, and Toni Collette portray their characters in such a way that you want to kiss them, so where is the problem? It’s probably mainly the fact that with no character do they fully explain where the rub is. They simply throw us to the roof of the skyscraper off which everyone wants to jump. And then suddenly a cut and a genius idea is born. But why? That’s the outcome I am having a lot of trouble understanding and it is possibly the biggest problem of this movie. (10.11.2015)

(UCI Kinowelt, Potsdam, Deutschland, 22.4.2014) Ich mag das britische Kino, und so war A Long Way Down eine naheliegende Wahl bei der Auswahl eines Films, den ich im Kino sehen wollte. Die vier Hauptfiguren hätten sich jederzeit und unter allen Umständen treffen können, aber der Selbstmordversuch war wirklich einfallsreich. Die Darsteller waren sympathisch, die Geschichte hatte sowohl komische als auch tragische Momente, und beide Komponenten wurden effektiv eingesetzt. Und ich darf nicht vergessen, den unverwechselbaren Soundtrack zu erwähnen, der mir ebenfalls gefallen hat. Kurzum, ein netter Film, der unterhält, aber auch bewegt. (25.04.2014)

I wasn't really looking forward to this film, so I was quite surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I was very close to giving it four stars, but the inevitable monologues and dialogues at the end tried to play on my emotions in a disgusting way, so I ended up giving just three. The theme of the film toyed with a similar idea to El Club de los Suicidas, and the casting of Imogen Poots and Toni Collette was a great move. I'm all the more annoyed by the disappointing ending. It's one of those modern dramas with a fairly interesting premise that oscillates between comedy and drama. Unfortunately, in this case, it gets a bit muddled at times because there are some dull moments and the ending just doesn't quite fit with the rest. It’s got a good start, but it gradually loses steam. It's a good thing it has such interesting actors. (15.04.2016)
