It is generally agreed that Frič made better films with Jiří Voskovec and Jan Werich, but Honzl gave them more energy and realness. I really don't feel like Jiří Voskovec and Jan Werich act so inorganic with the rest of the ensemble in this film because the Western world pretense is odd enough as it is. Actors like Šmeral, Mandlová, and Záhorský don’t do a very good job. Lion-el is a topic plucked from the crisis into the void. Yet we can enjoy the clowning around, and thankfully, that is most important. (22.02.2009)

"Rub a líc" ist eines meiner Lieblingsstücke des Theaters Osvobozené divadlo und seine Verfilmung ist fast perfekt geworden. Wenn die Handlung nicht chaotisch gewesen wäre, was wahrscheinlich darauf zurückzuführen ist, dass einige Teile des Films während des Krieges verloren gegangen sind, hätte ich keinen einzigen Vorbehalt. Es ist zweifellos der beste Film von Voskovec und Werich, der witzigste und gleichzeitig der ernsthafteste. Manchmal lief mir ein Schauder über den Rücken. Dank der Regie von Martin Frič wirken die grotesken Eskapaden (das Schreiben einer Parole oder das Herunternehmen des Gitters) nicht nur wie Nachahmungen von anderen, berühmteren Szenen, sondern wie hundertprozentige Originale. Wer hat Sie hergeschickt? – Der Hunger. – Wer ist das? – Der beste Koch. (30.08.2015)

The way the gentlemen fool around with a hand grenade is truly unforgettable, but there are more scenes like that in this anti-war movie. I like how they approached it with lightness, because the call for pacifism here is not fundamentally harsh, it doesn't force you, but it's all human, and of course, it's incredibly entertaining. Humor with a message that easily surpassed the long years. (19.12.2014)
