Teheran, November 1979: Im Zuge politischer Unruhen nimmt eine radikalisierte Studentenschaft die US-Botschaft in Beschlag. Nur sechs Diplomaten gelingt die Flucht. Vorübergehend finden sie in der kanadischen Botschaft Unterschupf. CIA-Mitarbeiter Tony Mendez präsentiert eine waghalsige Idee, um die Untergetauchten heimzuholen. Getarnt als kanadische Filmcrew, die eine Hollywood-Produktion plant, will er sie aus dem Iran schleusen. So genial das Täuschungsmanöver auch sein mag, die Gefahr einer Entdeckung lauert überall und entpuppt sich letztendlich als erschreckend real. (ORF)
