This portrait of the intriguing stage designer Josef Svoboda (1920–2002) was instigated by his grandson, film editor Jakub Hejna, whose wish was to find out more about his grandfather. Reminiscences from people who knew Svoboda, and his family and friends, along with archive footage, are gradually pieced together to form an image of a man totally committed to his chosen profession. This was a visionary, whose creations were acknowledged internationally, working as he did in some of the world’s most prestigious stage venues. (Karlovy Vary International Film Festival)
