There is a similarity between Jörg Ratgeb - a German painter from the turn of the fifteenth century - and Andrei Rublev, a medieval Russian painter of religious iconography: we know relatively little about them. They have something more in common: cinema took an interest in both of them. Rublev became the protagonist of Andrei Tarkovsky’s masterpiece, and Ratgeb was the focus of Benhard Stephan’s successful film, which was screened in Poland 40 years ago. Stephan depicted Ratgeb just like Tarkovsky did Rublev, as not only a great artist, but a witness to turbulent historical events of their respective eras as well. (Camerimage)
