24 Stunden im Leben eines Ehepaares an einem Sommerwochenende in Mailand: Giovanni und Lidia haben sich nur noch wenig zu sagen. Während Lidia einen ziellosen Spaziergang durch die armen Stadtteile Mailands auf den Spuren ihrer Vergangenheit unternimmt, ist ihr Mann auf einem Verlagsempfang. Und auch auf der Party eines reichen Industriemagnaten trennen sich ihre Wege - Giovanni entwickelt reges Interesse für die hübschen Tochter Valentina und ein Fremder macht auch Lidia Avancen. Erst in den frühen Morgenstunden, als das Ehepaar die Nachricht vom Tod ihres gemeinsamen Freundes Tommaso ereilt, kommt es im leeren Park der Villa endlich zur Aussprache zwischen Lidia und Giovanni ... Antonionis berühmte Tetralogie der Gefühle mit Monica Vitti ist eine einzige aufgeblasene Blase, in der es darum geht, vom Nichts zum Nichts zu wandern. Es geht darum, Situationen zu inszenieren, die scheinbar universell und doch banal sind. Hier haben wir zum Beispiel Mailand und die Geschichte einiger Stunden, in denen wir ein Ehepaar kennenlernen, das vielleicht nur durch seine Vorliebe für bessere Kleidung und - besonders bei Jeanne Moreau - durch das Bedürfnis, sich bei jeder Stimmungsänderung umzuziehen, definiert wird. Wenn dies ausreicht, um einen Menschen glücklich zu machen, dann bitte. Marcello ist mehr denn je nur eine Art Silhouette eines Mannes im Smoking, Bernhard Wicki hat zu wenig Platz für etwas Tiefgründigeres, und Monica? Sie ist nur da, um dem Paar zu bestätigen, dass es sich wirklich auseinandergelebt hat. Ästhetisiert bis hin zur prätentiösen Langeweile, die zur Kunst stilisiert wird.

I apologize for those words, but I haven't seen a movie about sh*t like "Night" in a long time. I don't like the characters portrayed here, I don't like their lifestyle, and I don't like what the film is actually about because it's about nothing. I am starting to like this era of Italian and French cinema less and less.

A very impressively constructed emotional melodrama with a simple message, a beautiful directorial touch and a cinematography pulsing with life. More than a story, the script resembles a sequence of symbolic scenes that expresses both the spiritual emptiness that prevails between the central couple and the general absurdity of the existential motives of the social elite, their utter indifference and superficiality. Nothing much happens, but it's beautiful to watch and I can never get tired of actors like Moreau and Mastroianni. But I have two major issues. Firstly, these premises, in the way they are written and executed, feel like a mere intellectual pseudo-artistic bastion of imagery, not to mention how often they were dissected by the Italian artists of the time. And secondly, the film should have ended with the couple's departure from Valentina's room, everything that is said afterwards is nothing but a tediously set-up mush and a self-centred attempt to reach the finale with the deepest and most moving turn of phrase. And I really wanted to give it 4*.
