"What Hungarian modern pentathlonists today need most is an example in humbleness". A remarkable pronouncement coming from one of the greatest pentathlonists in history: Andras Balczó. Director Ferenc Kósa remembers him well. Together with millions of Hungarians he closely followed Balczó's performance on TV. In 1977, a meeting took place between these two men, with the intention to the examine the motives behind Balczó's glorious career. At the beginning of the film, Balczó explains his motivation by saying that he had a need for security: "I thought modern pentathlon would offer me just the kind of action that could be measured and judged fairly".
Nowadays, Andras Balczó has withdrawn from sports. At the sideline of modern pentathlon he attempts to create an atmosphere of fair play. At the end of the film, we see Balczó brooding over the tragedies that are apt to plague a person's life once the possibility of gauging one's performance is lost.
