An einem schicksalhaften Tag des Jahres 1879 verliebt sich der bettelarme Telegrammbote Florentino (Javier Bardem) unsterblich in Fermina (Giovanna Mezziogiorno), die schöne Tochter eines wohlhabenden Geschäftsmannes. Tagtäglich schreiben sich die beiden Liebesbriefe, doch als Florentino um Ferminas Hand anhält, lehnt sie ab und heiratet stattdessen einen angesehenen Arzt. Florentino aber gibt die Hoffnung nicht auf und verfolgt das Leben seiner Angebeteten und ihrer Familie mit größter Aufmerksamkeit, während er selbst zahllose Affären eingeht und zum Direktor der Karibischen Flussgesellschaft aufsteigt. 51 Jahre, neun Monate und vier Tage später, auf der Beerdigung ihres Gatten, steht Florentino abermals vor Fermina und gesteht ihr nochmal seine Liebe… (Verleiher-Text)
