Something evil is stirring in the small mining town of Gold Lick, and it's not happy. Guan-di, the Chinese protector of the dead with a strange affinity for bean curd, has been awakened by reckless teenagers, and now his bloody crusade to wipe out the town's entire population can only be stopped by one man - Bruce Campbell, B-move star and deadbeat ex-husband extraordinaire, who's recruited to be their unwitting savior. Thinking the whole scenario's a publicity prank, Bruce is distracted from his mission by a hot mom and fan boys aplenty-- but when our hero has to face off against a dark force more fearsome than a Hollywood agent, the laughs and screams start flying! I can’t say I’m a big fan of Bruce Campbell’s. I have other favorites. Anyway, I know his movies and I wasn’t over the moon about them either. But I understand that they have their fans. But it so happened that I needed a laugh, and this seemed like a parody of everything Bruce had shot in the past. And that’s exactly what I got. Bruce is making fun of himself, his movies, roles and also Hollywood, which is always a given. In result, the hour and a half of this movie was pretty chill, sometimes funny, sometimes not so. But it made me so relaxed that I didn’t want it to be over. ()
Bruce Campbell playing himself in a Galaxy Quest concept with a dash of Van Damme-like sincerity. Brilliant, right? Well, unfortunately, it doesn’t go beyond the premise. ()
Well, this highly anticipated film left me with mixed feelings, with disappointment being the prevailing one. My Name Is Bruce is a thoroughbred comedy that delivers horror elements in a style similar to Army of Darkness, but unfortunately, the humour didn’t work out (on me). Cheap and predictable jokes may formally belong in a film about “the king of the Bs”, but they just don’t make me laugh, and a comedy that only makes me smile slightly a few times over its entire runtime doesn’t deserve a better rating. In any case, fans of Campbell will probably be thrilled. ()
