Owner of a steel plant Gowell devotes his time to the smooth running of his factory while his wife leads an idle life. Their spoiled son Jiří turns into an attractive but dissipated man who wants to marry Olga, the daughter of the wealthy Reymond. After Gowell's steelworks goes bankrupt, and his wife runs off with her lover, there is no more talk of wedding. Jiří throws himself into "a tough struggle for existence"; first he works as a labourer, then he studies modern languages and finally acquires the position of procurator. When "a catastrophe at sea also destroys the property of Olga's father," the girl goes to seek work in a factory office. Here she meets Jiří who, "for an hour, makes her suffer the anguish of unrequited love but then finally takes her, repentant and submissive, into his arms".
