Im Hafen von Piräus treffen zwei grundverschiedene Charaktere zufällig aufeinander: der sensible englische Schriftsteller Basil und der impulsive Makedonier Alexis Sorbas. Basil, der auf Kreta eine Braunkohlenmine geerbt hat, heuert den vitalen Griechen als Werkleiter an. Sorbas stürzt sich mit Eifer in die Arbeit. Basil überläßt ihm völlig die Initiative, trägt unbekümmert das finanzielle Risiko. Um das Material für eine Drahtseilbahn zu kaufen reist Sorbas eines Tages in die Stadt, verlebt Basils Geld jedoch dort mit einem Mädchen. Basil erschüttert das nicht, seine Liebe zu einer attraktiven Witwe nimmt ihn völlig in Anspruch… (Verleiher-Text)
