In einem Dorf nahe des Mississippi findet der arbeitslose Herumtreiber Ben Quick (Don Johnson) Arbeit bei Will Varner (Jason Robards), dem reichsten, aber auch skrupellosesten Farmer. Er wird sein Gönner, denn er mag Bens draufgängerische Ader. Seinen Sohn Jody hingegen hält er für einen Schwächling, seine Tochter Noel für zu eigenwillig. When I compare this film with the almost 30-year older original, I can’t give more than three stars. The creators added new characters and dramatic plots to the new version, but I can't say I’m impressed. I have nothing against the cast, but Paul Newman, Orson Welles and Joanne Woodward were clearly better than their counterparts. Plus, I was strongly annoyed by some of the original dialogue cropping up here and there, which seemed rather inappropriate or almost absurd when set in the 80s. Not bad overall, but I’m still more inclined towards the original version.
