Shortly after the end of the Second World War. The whole country is striving to recover its economic life, but in some places there really seems to be a hitch. For example, on the construction site of the Koudelák company, nothing is quite as it should be. The assistant Beránek is warning the owner of the construction company that the building they are working on is not safe enough. He discusses the irregularities at the construction site with Koudelák's daughter Alena, whom he takes to a dancing party to celebrate his birthday. But Alena doesn't want to hear about it. The next day, Beránek is found lying unconscious in the light shaft of the house in which Alena lives, as does the foreman Klimeš with whom Beránek had a fight over the work. Beránek dies on the way to the hospital. His murder is being investigated by criminologists Zouplna and Šimák, who is a specialist in the black market. Several people are suspected of murder: foreman Klimeš, black marketer Matuška, Alena, and her beloved Bártl. But Šimák discovers a different murderer. He invites everyone involved to the construction site that evening and there reveals the real killer - the building contractor Koudelák. (Verleiher-Text)

Deutsch Ein solider Krimi – im Hinblick darauf, dass er im Jahr 1949 entstanden ist, hätte er noch mehr ideologische Elemente haben können. Zum Glück ist es aber nicht der Fall. Die Besetzung der Rolle des Oberinspektors mit Josef Beyvl kam mir anfangs sehr merkwürdig vor. Dieser gutmütige Kerl soll alle Missetaten aufdecken und den Mörder finden? Im Laufe der Zeit wurde immer klarer, dass diese Arbeit Vladimír Šmeral übernehmen wird. Er wirkt als Kriminalist auch viel professioneller. Damit war ich zufrieden. Am besten hat mir wahrscheinlich die Szene mit dem Opfer und dem Durchsuchen des Lichtschachts gefallen. Und die ungemein düstere Musik von Kalaš! Übrigens, Karel Pavlík sieht in der Rolle von Koudelák so aus, als ob er zu uns aus den besten Filmen noir aus Hollywood gekommen wäre. ()

Englisch I'm expanding my horizons when it comes to Czech cinema, and so I came across this piece, which was completely unknown to me before. Given the time and foreign films that were being made, this is essentially a Czech noir film, with a classic crime plot that unfortunately loses some seriousness due to the setting, even though the authors try to incorporate noir elements. Unfortunately, there is no hero who would dominate the film. Instead, it remains a small-town investigation, accompanied by music that tries to build tension in certain scenes. In terms of atmosphere, it works quite well, but the second half is weaker and somewhat boring. On the other hand, I still have the feeling that, considering its time and the fact that the Czechs are playing with a genre that is not their classic and still occasionally evokes films for nostalgic viewers, a film has been created that definitely deserves above-average rating. ()
