Auf den ersten Blick sind Laura und Martin Burney das ideale Paar. Aber das scheinbar harmonische Leben im Traumhaus am Strand trügt - Martin ist ein unberechenbarer Psychopath, der seine Frau seelisch und körperlich brutal misshandelt. Verzweifelt schmiedet Laura Fluchtpläne. Bei einer Segelpartie sieht sie ihre letzte Chance Laura erleidet einen "tödlichen Unfall" und entflieht in eine weit entfernte Kleinstadt.
