Irene beginnt ihren neuen Job als Rezeptionistin im Waldhaus, einem einsam gelegenen Berghotel in den österreichischen Alpen. Eifrig versucht sie ihre Aufgaben zu erfüllen, doch die Angestellten des Hotels erscheinen ihr zunehmend unheimlich. Irene fühlt eine rätselhafte Bedrohung, der sie sich nicht länger entziehen kann. The film tries to give an uncertain scary impression, not exactly showing the specific evil in the hotel, but at the same time you can feel it emanating from all the walls of all the floors. The atmosphere is very good. The problem was the main character who didn’t actually react to all this evil and seemed rather unaffected by it. And so was I, with the only difference that unlike her nothing really scared me there, and I was rather falling asleep watching it.

A small example of how to create a palpable atmosphere without music. All it takes is a bit of strange humming or wind noise and a not-so-cozy hotel on the edge of the forest. I confess that I wouldn't stay there for even a second! Luckily, the film didn't have a longer runtime, as the omnipresent oppressive tension was almost impossible to endure. It’s really too bad about the weak ending. I would appreciate something a bit more specific, but still better than some bloodbath at the end.
