Winner (Canes Film Festival) and nominee (Goya Awards) at some of the most prestigious film festivals, Jaime Rosales' feature debut was widely praised for the ultra-realism portrayed in the way he shows he life of an ordinary man transformed into unbridled madness. This fascinating example of realism from Spain is focused on the mundane life of Abel who lives with his mother in a small town in the outskirts of Barcelona. His whole life revolves around their small family business, his mother's house, his girlfriends bed, the corner newsstand, and the neighborhood bars and cafes. It's always more of the same: the same old problems, same faces, and the same old conversations. As a result of this, his personality is weathered down until a new character is born without feelings or emotions who heeds the call to kill without remorse. The abrupt and somewhat vicious change in the way Abel acts remains hidden under his pleasant, calm exterior, until something inexplicably cracks, leaving him powerless to stop it. (Verleiher-Text)
