The 1985 James R. Thompson Center, a former government building, is an atypical glass building in the middle of Chicago with a monumental atrium resembling the hull of a spaceship. The red-and-blue postmodern palace has until now served the city as an indoor public space. But the building, designed by German-American architect Helmut Jahn, has faced possible demolition for the past few years.
