The protagonist of the eastern set in the 1830's, Farkas Csapó Gyurka, escapes from prison and returns to the plains of Karcag to take revenge on his denouncers. The shepherds of the plain see him as their protector, since the administration of the increasingly wealthy and industrialising county restricts their space of life more and more. The impoverished gentry offspring, Mérges Balázs, now an officer of the gendarmerie, merely pretends to pursue the infamous chief of the outlaws until Gyurka kills a herder fired by the ambitious intriguer, Jeles Matyi, who wants to take over the leadership. Blood-money is offered for Gyurka's head and after a show-down with Matyi, the peasants send him to the halter. (Verleiher-Text)
