The film is a parable about honesty. The tired and sick country physician, doctor Weiss, has worked all through his life. He could finally withdraw from working, but his young successor leaves the district because of a trip abroad. Weisz is asked to continue working for some more time. For all his protestations, nobody seems to listen to him. Eventually, in spite of the protestations of his wife and his bad health condition, he consents. His conscious is the stronger party. His decimated high-school class gathers for their 50 year anniversary. Weiss recalls his past, a friend invites him to go abroad and rest, but he continues working. One night he is called to a delivery by a man who humiliated him during the prosecution of the Jews. Weiss does not refuse him. He helps the delivery through, and when it is over he dies.
