The 12-year-old Zsolt lives with her old and sickly grandmother in a block of flats by the Danube. Bizsu used to be an actress, but is now bed-ridden, her grandchild keeps her spirit up. Zsolt is refused by the other children. In his loneliness he meets Juli, the pregnant girl who has escaped from a reformatory school. Slowly, the two introverted young people make friends. Julis child is still-born. Ibi reports this to the police, Juli is taken to hospital where she commits suicide. Zsolt thrusts Ibi into the Danube. Bizsu is dying in a hospital, and Zsolt is left entirely alone. He joins the policeman investigating the case of Ibis death and admits his deed after a few days of acquaintance and conversation.
