Vier Terroristen haben in New York eine U-Bahn entführt und fordern ein Lösegeld von einer Millikon Dollar, ansonsten wollen sie die Insassen erschießen. Nach der Geldübergabe wird es aber erst richtig heikel, denn der verantwortliche Polizist Zachery Garber (Walter Matthau) entdeckt, daß die Passagiere jetzt alleine, ohne Zugführer, unterwegs sind.
