Stephen Vincent Bennets Kurzgeschichte "Der Teufel und Daniel Webster" ist hierzulande nicht allzu bekannt. Sie wurde erstmals 1937 veröffentlicht. Ihre Wurzeln finden sich in "Faust" und bei Washington Irving, dem anschließenden Schaffen von Archibald MacLeish und dem Musical "Scratch". Unter den Verfilmungen ist All That Money Can Buy (1941) erwähnenswert, in dem Benets "Faust" zum ersten Mal verfilmt wird. Und schließlich Shortcut to Happiness - Der Teufel steckt im Detail? Es ist kein sehr glückliches Regiedebüt Baldwins, denn das Tauziehen mit den Produzenten sollte offenbar zu einem zweiten Teuflisch führen. Aber obwohl es ein All-Star-Team gibt, vor allem die große Teufelin Jenn Love, wird die Geschichte auf eine weitere Adaption warten müssen, um ausreichend rehabilitiert zu werden.

A dumb variation on a Faustian tale aimed at Americans, so (and this can't possibly be a spoiler) it must have a happy ending. Perhaps the most striking thing about Shortcut to Happiness is the direct proportion "the better the actor, the more boring they are".
