In 2004 the theatre show Rwanda 94 was staged in Rwanda to mark the 10th anniversary of the genocide of the Tutsi and the massacre of Hutu moderates. The intense, cathartic response of the Rwandan audience highlights the sufferings and mental scars of the survivors. Can theatre help to come to terms with the inconceivable? Echoing the issues tackled in the play, the film charts the memory of the genocide through the disinterment and dignified burial of victims, through the accounts of survivors. They express their profound resentment of the international community for their silent complicity during the genocide and also articulate their fears of exclusion, discrimination and violence, to which they are still subjected today. Rwanda. A travers nous, l’humanité gives voice to the victims and survivors of the genocide. (DOK.fest München)
