Rey Negro – The Black King is a portrait of the Chilean Sergio Vesely who went into exile to Germany twenty years ago. His way of living and his experiences are inseparable from his music. During the dictatorship of Pinochet he was captured and tortured. The then 22 year old Sergio Vesely discovered the darkest sides of his life, of himself and his passion for music. In concentration camps and prisons he learned to find a way out of his pains and fury. He learned to find his freedom in the protecting robe of music. But his songs aren’t just hidden protest and prosecution. They show us how he vanquished desperation and how he learned to clear his mind to attain self awareness. In 2002, thirty years later, Sergio Vesely begins a journey into his past. He goes back to search for all the people and places in Chile who affected and influenced his life. A journey to his roots.
