At first glance, we recognize only a deciduous or coniferous forest. But under the tree crowns we can find organisms with longevity beyond our wildest fantasies. Islands of ancient vegetation in forests of southern Bohemia have accumulated unspeakable species diversity over centuries of undisturbed development. We can get a different perspective thanks to the enduring, interdisciplinary cooperation of biologists and economic interests. The mapping of original forest flora brings findings that allow for targeted conservation of valuable biotopes and their protection for future generations against invasive species and reckless human intrusion.
